Lupus is a disease of the immune system where the immune systems turns on the person and attacks healthy cells and tissues. This leads to damage of several parts of the body including skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain and blood vessels. The cause of Lupus is not known at this time but it is probably a combination of inheritance (genes) and environmental factors that trigger the disease.
Lupus an occur in anybody but it is more common in women. It occurs more commonly in women of African-American, Hispanic, Asian descent than in Caucasian women. Symptoms of Lupus include joint pains, skin rash, body aches, hair loss, sun-sensitivity, sores in the mouth, low blood count and tiredness. These symptoms may come and go.
Lupus is diagnosed by a variety of blood tests which are best ordered by your physician. You should be proactive in your health by telling your doctor any unusual thing you have noticed about your body.
Dr. Amanambu graduated from medical school in 1989 from the University of Nigeria. He did his postgraduate medical training in internal medicine at The Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Amanambu also received a Master of Public Health (MPH) in preventive medicine and public health from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in 2008. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP), and his special interests include preventive medicine, care of elderly persons, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic illnesses.
