Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or “Reflux” is a condition where stomach acid and sometimes duodenal juices reflux back into the esophagus causing the familiar burning sensation in the mid-chest. Sometimes this does not cause any symptoms leading to the so-called “silent reflux”. Some uncommon symptoms include hoarseness, asthma, and dental problems. If left untreated for several years, it can lead to strictures and cancers in the esophagus.
Certain conditions and habits predispose individuals to develop GERD. These include obesity, certain autoimmune diseases like scleroderma, eating late at night or too close to bedtime, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and long-standing diabetes.

Dr. Amanambu graduated from medical school in 1989 from the University of Nigeria. He did his postgraduate medical training in internal medicine at The Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Amanambu also received a Master of Public Health (MPH) in preventive medicine and public health from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in 2008. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP), and his special interests include preventive medicine, care of elderly persons, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic illnesses.
